SCDC Release Outcomes Explained
The South Carolina Department of Corrections holds adults sentenced to state terms, generally exceeding three months. That role differs from Cherokee County Detention Center, which handles local pretrial custody and short local sentences. Transfer from the county jail to SCDC is not a release into the community. It is a change from local to state custody. Likewise, departure from SCDC can lead to unconditional discharge, parole, probation, community supervision, supervised reentry, another custodian, or death.
The SCDC released list has shown terms including PAROLED, PROBATION, COMMUNITY SUPV, INTENSIVE SUPV, and SUPV RE-ENTRY, as well as ordinary release variants and death. Do not flatten those labels into “free.” Parole lets an eligible person complete a prison sentence under conditions in the community. Probation is court-ordered supervision and may be imposed instead of prison or after custody. A discharge ends the relevant sentence or custody status, while another hold can still control the person's location.
Confirm an SCDC Release
Use the SCDC Released Inmate List first when the question concerns a completed state-prison stay. The search requires a release-date range and County selection. An optional sex-offender filter is available. Choose Cherokee when that is the relevant available criterion, but do not redefine the field as release destination or conviction county. SCDC did not define it that way in the reviewed material. If the relationship to Cherokee is unclear, search ALL LOCATIONS and broaden the date window in defensible steps.
- Enter a plausible beginning and ending release date.
- Select Cherokee or all locations as the facts support.
- Run the list and scan the displayed results for the correct person and SCDC ID.
- Read the Release Date and Release Type together.
- Use Export when the added SID, detainer, victim-indicator, or offense fields help confirm the match.
The visible results include SCDC ID, name, sex, race, age, sex-offender indicator, release date, release type, and County. Export adds SID, victim indicator, detainer indicator, and most serious offense. The released list does not include a photograph. A detainer field can be crucial because the end of SCDC custody may lead to another agency rather than community return.
Current Versus Released SCDC Records
The current SCDC offender search answers whether a person is now sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC. It accepts SCDC ID, SID, and first or last name. Advanced options include projected-release-date ranges and offense categories. SCDC states that this search excludes released people, county detainees, people under parole or probation, juveniles, and fugitives, and that its information is as of the prior midnight.
| System | Use it for | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| SCDC current search | Current state imprisonment and projections | A former prisoner will remain listed |
| SCDC released list | Actual recorded prison departure date and type | Every departure was community freedom |
| SCDPPPS search | Recorded state supervision as of the prior day | A missing result proves incarceration or discharge |
| Cherokee jail record | County booking, exit, and transfer | It covers later SCDC custody |
A current detail page may show identity descriptors, the most recent frontal image and Picture Date, admission date, prison location, sentence length, projected release date, projected parole eligibility, and supervised furlough eligibility. Those are current-prison fields. The projected date can change and is not an actual release record. Once departure occurs, replace the projection with the released list or an agency record.
SCDC Projected Release Limits
The SCDC release-date calculator disclaimer explains that public estimates can change. Sentence computation can depend on the exact judgment, jail credit, concurrent or consecutive terms, sentence class, forfeited credits, work or education credits, and later legal action. A projected parole eligibility date is not a parole grant. A Board grant is also not the same as physical departure because a release order and implementation still follow.
South Carolina Code Title 24, Chapter 13 includes several distinct rules. Section 24-13-150 contains an 85-percent early release or discharge floor for defined no-parole offenses. Section 24-13-125's 80-percent figure concerns work-release eligibility and should not be confused with that release floor. Other provisions govern good conduct, work credits, education credits, and possible county public-work reductions. No Cherokee County local-credit implementation was verified, so a state release date should not be calculated from a charge label or a generic formula.
The correct sequence is simple: use projected fields only before release, label them as estimates, and return to the SCDC released record after the person actually leaves state custody. The Projected Release Date resource explains the calculation route in more depth.
SCDC Supervision After Release
When the released list reports parole, probation, community supervision, intensive supervision, supervised reentry, or supervised furlough, check the SCDPPPS Offender Search. It accepts combinations of first and last name, SID, birth year, and County. County is a supervision-search criterion, not proof of arrest location or destination. Use several identifiers to reduce same-name errors.
SCDPPPS online information represents the previous day. Same-day confirmation belongs with the county of supervision. The Cherokee office is at 113 West Buford, Suite C, Gaffney, with phone 864-489-4568. A positive result supports recorded supervision as of the tool's date. A missing result has several explanations: supervision may have ended, identifiers may differ, the person may never have entered SCDPPPS, or the system may not yet reflect a change.
- Parole
- Conditional community service of the remaining prison sentence.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision that may occur instead of prison or after custody.
- Discharge
- End of the relevant custody or supervision obligation.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another agency to take or hold custody.
Request SCDC Release Records
When the public list is not enough, direct a written request to the agency that maintained the state-prison record. Ask for the actual release date and type, last SCDC location, releasable sentence and credit computation, and any releasable detainer, transfer, or receiving-agency information. Include full name, date of birth if known, SCDC ID, SID, relevant dates, and the reason the particular record can be identified. Request a releasable identification image separately if it is needed to distinguish the record.
The SCDC legal and FOIA page routes requests to FOIA@doc.sc.gov or the FOIA Coordinator, Office of General Counsel, SCDC, P.O. Box 21787, Columbia, SC 29221-1787. General SCDC phone service is 803-896-8500, while the Inmate Records Office is 803-896-8531. Published charges include black-and-white hard copies at $0.10 per page, color at $0.25 per page, and search, retrieval, or redaction at $18.95 per hour, though rates can change and a deposit may be required.
Ask for existing electronic records and electronic delivery where possible. An agency does not have to create a new analysis. If part of the record is exempt, ask for reasonably segregable nonexempt portions and the exemption relied upon. An SCDC release record documents SCDC custody; it does not replace the county booking sheet for an earlier Cherokee jail episode.
Historic Cherokee Prison References
SCDC's chronology says the state assumed Cherokee County Prison Camp in 1974 and later called it Cherokee Correctional Center. That historical name may appear in older papers or news accounts. It is absent from the current SCDC institution directory, which means it must not be presented as an operating institution, current release point, or place to call.
No active SCDC institution is listed in Cherokee County. A person connected to Cherokee can serve a state sentence at an institution elsewhere in South Carolina. Search by SCDC ID or SID whenever possible, not by assuming a local prison location. Historical local custody, modern county detention, and present state incarceration are three different records paths.
SCDC Notifications and Verification
South Carolina VINE contains state and county information, but SCDC crime-victim notification uses SCDC Victim Services at 1-800-835-0304. A registration made while someone was in Cherokee County Detention Center does not automatically follow an interagency transfer. Re-register through the correct state route. A custody notice can prompt a timely check, but it does not replace the released list or certified record.
Before treating any result as final, reconcile identity, the last confirmed custodian, the actual change date and type, and the next status. A Cherokee County court case can explain the sentence. The county jail can document transfer into SCDC. SCDC records then control the state-prison stay and departure, while SCDPPPS controls the later supervision record. That chain prevents a local roster disappearance from being mistaken for an SCDC discharge.
